Make tik tok pieces entertaining not advertorial

It’s no secret TikTok has become one of the hottest social media platforms in recent years. And it’s easy to understand why: short user videos are entertaining, engaging, and often used to showcase creativity.

When it comes to modern advertising, it can be exhausting to keep up with all of the new trends, especially with the rise of social media platforms like TikTok. Many businesses have been quick to jump on the bandwagon in an effort to target younger audiences.

But while TikTok may be a great platform for entertainment, it’s not necessarily the best choice for commercials. Let’s take a look at why this is the case.

3 REASONS WHY TIKTOK ISN’T THE SOLUTION FOR YOUR BUSINESS’ COMMERCIALS

1. The Audience on TikTok Is Young

TikTok’s main user base is between the ages of 18 – 24, according to Statista. While this age group may have some spending power, their primary concern is entertainment, rather than buying products or services.

This means that if you choose to use TikTok for commercials, your ads will likely be seen by an audience that isn’t interested in what you have to offer.

2. TikTok Users Have Short Attention Spans

Another reason why TikTok videos don’t make great commercial content is because users have incredibly short attention spans. While ads can be up to 60 seconds, users are accustomed to an average of 10 – 15 second videos.

In many cases, this simply isn’t enough time for a business to effectively communicate their message or brand values. If you want to truly connect with your audience, you need more than 15 seconds – you need something that will grab your audience’s attention and hold it.

3. TikTok Prioritizes Creativity & Authenticty

On this social-first platform, there’s a lot of opportunity for advertising, but not necessarily for commercials.

In fact, in their “Don’t Make Ads. Make TikToks.” campaign, the company makes the bold ask that companies quit trying to advertise. Instead, they ask that compelling and captivating TikToks are the first priority.

While this is possible (and certainly our goal!) in creating the best advertisements, a more modern TikTok–style video is more challenging as a commercial.

While TikTok ads can be up to 60 seconds max and targeting is better than it once was, most people who use TikTok are looking for entertainment, not buying advice. Your audience could likely be annoyed by commercials that interrupt their experience. Ultimately, this could lead to negative brand sentiment and turn users away from your product or service. Ready to get started with commercial advertising the right way? Keller Media Works can help.
